The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as celebrated in Bampton, Oxfordshire - June 1953
In June 1953, the people of Bampton joined communities across Britain in celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with a programme of festivities that brought the village together. Streets and homes were decorated with flags and bunting, while local events included parades, parties, sports, music and celebrations for children and families.
The occasion marked a moment of national pride and post-war optimism, and many of the photographs and memories preserved in the archive capture the strong sense of community spirit that defined Bampton at the time. These records provide a fascinating glimpse into how the historic royal event was celebrated in an Oxfordshire village in the summer of 1953.
