Filming Downton Abbey in Bampton
Bampton became internationally famous when it was chosen as the principal filming location for the village scenes in the television series Downton Abbey. Although the programme was set in Yorkshire, much of the fictional village of “Downton” was actually filmed in the streets and buildings of Bampton, bringing film crews, actors and visitors to the village for more than a decade.
Filming began in 2009 for the first series, and Bampton quickly became recognisable to viewers around the world. Many familiar scenes were filmed around the church, village green and historic buildings at the centre of the village.
Today, visitors can still walk through the streets of Bampton and recognise many familiar settings from the series. The connection with Downton Abbey has become an important part of the village’s modern history and has introduced Bampton’s heritage to audiences around the world.
